[WP] We failed to stop the asteroid. by Nameless in writingprompts

[–]deleted 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

"The ones we couldn't lift off planet, we got them to the shelters underground, and I'm truly sorry for the ones we can't save but you know we did absolutely everything we could. It'll hit in six hours. The shelters have enough supplies to last months, and as soon as the dust clears we'll be moving your people to new homes," says the man on the viewscreen. He is old and portly and his uniform speckled in metal glints and stars fits well over his short frame.

"Ten million dead. That's the estimate, your estimate." He sits in his office and watches the viewscreen with the old and portly man on it, but he's tall and gaunt, and he leans over the console and rests one bony finger over a random switch.

The uniformed man speaks again."I'm hurting over every single one, every single one, but you know we can't approve your request."

"The ships can reach it on time, you can move the thing fast enough. Every second you waste is ten million dead—"

"I know the number. I know. But what you're asking for risks the safety and the lives of all the men under my command. You know, shifting in interplanetary space, I don't think you know the science, the calculations can take days, and you're asking for the entire fleet, they could warp into the damn thing. I can't approve your request. You don't even know if the fleet has enough Delta-v to change the thing's course. The safety of my men is—"

"I don't care about the fucking science, I don't care about the fucking numbers, my people are going to burn to death because of your indecision. You cut the funding, we could've caught it on time but your greed and you wanted more ships and more guns and more soldiers. You want to lecture me on safety, but ten million are going to die because of your stupid fucking politics."

"We got your family and many others—"

"Half the shelters will collapse, God knows what will happen to the other half. You can save them, but you let your fucking cowardice decide instead. All you have to do is sign the bloody order and save ten million lives."

"I've already explained, you're like a broken record."

"You're going to make me beg? Fucking grovel because your ego demands it? If this were a core world the ships would be here already. But our lives are worth less than yours, isn't it?"

"Now that is simply not true."

"Don't fucking lie to me. Our lives aren't as important as yours. I know you've crunched the numbers, ten million isn't worth the men on those ships and the money you've sunk into them, that's what you think. That's what the men above you and the men above them think. Some nameless moon gets glassed and you sit by and watch, there'll be outrage and carnage on the screens, but it won't affect any of your lives except for the few seconds you'll spend wringing it out of your conscience. You'll probably get fired, some of you will be fined or imprisoned but after a few months of tears life will go on. The worlds will keep on spinning. And they'll die for no fucking reason at all."

"I can't ever say that I know what you're going through. There's a ship outside that will take you to safety. The shelters aren't, they're sub-optimal, and—"

He presses the switch on the console and he ends the transmission. Thank God, he thinks. He leads his staff to the rescue ship, and he makes his way down the lifts to the shelters where his people are waiting scared for a rock four miles wide to slam into the surface. They gather around him, and he shakes his head, says they'll be safe, the ships will come once the dust settles, and they'll get new homes in the core worlds where they'll be safe forever.
