Good tip for wood, unless you're just making something rough and temporary.

In metal, however, self-tapping screws are excellent.

How do you choose the drill bit size? Too small and you don't remove enough wood. Too big and you don't get any grip from the threads. Got recommendations for that?

I size em up to the screw I'm going to be using. Literally just hold it in front and make sure the inside of the screw (not the thread width) is slightly wider. Better to err on the side of too small, you don't need to remove an exact amount to prevent splitting, wood is fairly flexible.
