nslookup doesn't come up with anything, but tracert shows it running into msn.net, so yeah, looks like Microsoft doing a little looking around.

I can't find any program to defragment my linux partitions. Windows must the the superior OS!

Windows has had automatic defrag for quite some time now. NTFS is not the most performant filesystem but it does have some nice features, such as EFS, Bitlocker, and very detailed ACLs. With storage spaces, windows volume management is apparently as good as LVM.

I’m a reiserfs man myself though, love me some murderous dancing b-trees.

I'm sure Microsoft just wants to know how to help your broken files. Not what's in them.

That sure is weird.. Why would defragmenter need to connect to the internet..

Did your hard drive change how its MFT or sectors where laid out without the OS crapping out? No? It doesn't need an upgrade.

I believe I may have found the culprit in the Task Scheduler: Disk Diagnostic/Microsoft-Windows-DiskDiagnosticDataCollector

Never used a disk defrag in my life. Real file systems don't need this shit.

Switch to Linux/OpenBSD/FreeBSD. macos if you insist on spending money.

You haven't needed to manually defrag in Windows in quite a while. Despite a point of past criticism it is also aware of SSDs and how to properly deal with them.

Aside from Windows, I also run GNU/Linux.
