My impression is that it’s at least partly a manipulated political thing:

  • More testing gives more results and more positives.

  • They lump tests for virus and antibodies together. A positive antibody test could actually mean someone has had it and recovered, a good thing.

  • The criteria for a diagnosis can be very relaxed. In some cases they just infer someone has the virus because of some symptom, e.g. a cough.

  • Contact tracing by smartphone apps has kicked in: Once they infer you have Covid they can infer people you have been close to have it!

Anti-Trump politicians could manipulate this and the media gleefully amplifies it.

The actual death rate per day has been lower than it’s been in a while. That’s the most significant metric, yet the media emphasizes positive cases found per day (The other day I saw an article that grudgingly mentioned this but muttered about pending death certificates, sure enough now it’s trending up.)
