i'm with ya man. unfortunately, this philosophy means people can also think what they want, and there are always gonna be power-hungry, self-righteous pricks who think the way they think is better than the way you think.

yeah exactly. my sense of agency is something that i hold near and dear to my heart. i'm one of those people where if you tell me not to do something or that i can't do something, i will promptly go do that thing.

So deny them the power. Fewer laws and less taxes means less power to the power hungry pricks.

Lenin didn't have laws nor taxes on his side. Mao didn't have laws nor taxes on his side. Hitler was also initially denied those boons. And yet any list of wicked authoritarians is incomplete without them. Power comes from the barrel of a gun. And they're gonna a lot of those around.

I just watched V for Vendetta last night. It had been a few years since I watched. It used to be a fun movie to watch, but now its really just depressing and heavy. It felt way too realistic, when before it seemed so farfetched and far off. This country has changed so fast.

I think the internet has been an amazing tool to let people realize that all those thoughts that we usually internalize are actually a common ground among a huge group of people.

Outside of the internet, very few people have a clue as to what is going on. We are all preaching to the choir here at voat.Reddit used to be a bastion of higher thought/free speech....before that died. I belong to a small group of commandos at Facebook. 95% of my community is still tone deaf. Icelent did a better protest with 300,000 people than we do with 330,000,000 people. We actually arrested the last group of tax protestors....last week 400 marched in tax protest.

We have become exactly what I was taught was our enemy.

The only way to be truly sovereign is be a hermit. When you decide to be part of a community, you agree to live by their laws and social mores, even those you don't agree with. It really is a decision to remain in the community. You can't have the benefits [friends, paved roads, pre packaged toilet paper] without some level of submission [taxes, not blurting out every thought that crosses your mind, a job].

The ones in the universities are protesting for their perceived freedoms are actually asking for less freedom. They scream for equal rights and try to enforce it by pushing laws on to people. Think about it. They are not asking for freedom, but rather for more oppression.

The worst part is, they can't see the harm that they're doing or how ironic it is to push freedom through laws.

What matters more, the individual or society?

Good question. My answer lies in a society of individuals. If education was truly a priority, being a self sufficient badass would be part of the curriculum instead of being a worker bee.

A society of individuals still ends up being a collective. Decisions are made collectively.

I used to believe the an cap garbage, but a collectivist society with emphasis on protecting the people should be the goal for all societies, first and foremost.

I believe the opposite. Society is more important than individuality. Society dictates the rights of the individual. Hitler said "Society's needs come before the individual's needs."

I agree with that. With everyone wanting to be individuals, things cannot be agreed upon. This is most easily seen in the political parties system as well as many other things in life.

People with their individuality, such as homosexuality and transfags, change the face of our country, for what? To appease a minority that's less than 2 percent of our population? It's ridiculous.

False dichotomy. A large part of what creates our individual identities is the collective identities we choose to associate with. I find "society" as an abstraction is often less than helpful. What society? Is the "society" the world? The country you live in? Your racial/ethnic group? I think it's best to give people as much freedom as possible on the individual level to decide which "society" they wish to support. I think, that for example, referring the entire country of the size of America as an individual society is ridiculous.

Society is a collective if individuals. Should we do things for one person if society had a net loss? I believe no. Society's needs come before the individual's.

I believe race and ethnicity is a better factor, and inside America it is as well, as we are more segregated now than 50 years ago.

There are only individuals, society is just something individuals do

That's right. They brainwash you into thinking life is scary. Personal responsibility flies out the window as you give all your power to the very people who wanted it from the beginning. A multi generational pyramid scheme.

I'm fine with basic taxation but overall you're right and it's getting worse. One thing that alarms me is also the current wave of collectivist virtues.

The obsession with humility, with emotional openness instead of thought, wrestling with things alone coming to possible conclusions and ideas that aren't prescribed by society.

Seconding this, but I'd rather it go to shitty Michigan roads and base minimum healthcare, than UAVs. Honestly, our taxes pretty much exclusively go to fattening up our already retardedly bloated armed forces, while we defund important things like NASA and the Coast Guard.
