The company I work for really circle jerks about loyalty. Loyal customers. Loyal employees. They encourage people to work hard and do shit they might not necessarily want to do. Are you having health problems? Show up to work anyway. We need loyal people who do that. Anyone else need not apply.
None of that loyalty applies to me. I'm getting laid off. The contract my work was under wasn't renewed and despite only having used 4 hours of sick time in the two years I've been here, never taking a vacation and being one of the highest rated developers they have on staff, I'm out the door. They're not bothering trying to stick me on another project. Just tossing me and about four other guys.
Good news is that I have 9 months to find a new job, and that development jobs are plentiful.
That being said. I hate this industry. My first job was so miserable that I occasionally got stressed out enough to puke. I caught co-workers passing out at their desks at the end of 20 hour shifts. I heard people cry in bathrooms.
Software is a misrable industry and H1B Indians are only making it worse by devaluing the labor.
I'm going to take advantage of this situation to either switch industries, or start my own company. Where I am now, I feel more like a piece of equipment than a man. And I'm a piece of equipment nobody values.
