It has been stated that it takes 5k a month right now.

There are only so many ways to get the funding. I can think of: Donations, Subscriptions, Merch, Ads, Investors.
Investors.Atko has said that he has been turning away investors.
Donations. I agree that donations isn't going to cut it long term.
Merch will get us a little bit, but again is not a long term solution.
So now we're down to Ads and Subscriptions.
Ads. Many have said that they will not whitelist ads for Any site, Voat included. There was even a thread a couple days ago listing reasons the OP thought ads were bad across the board.
Subscriptions. How many active Voaters are we now? How much would each subscription need to be? Is it monthly? Yearly? Required? Tiered? All of this would need answered. And I have reservations about subscriptions. I can only think of two site off the top of my head which have subscriptions and had any success. SA and dA. You can read SA w/o one, but to post you require one. dA was a tiered model, you could post and read w/o one, but got features w one.

My problem w subscriptions is basically because of SA. It is a system which can be abused. $10 lifetime membership? Yeah, until you piss off a Mod and get banned.
dA had the tiered system, which I never bought because A: after a short time I hated the community, and B: the free version was a steaming pile. I'm not paying you money if your free version is a functional bag of crap.

So is a Voat subscription Tiered? Yearly? What happens when Amalek goes on a rant binge and gets banned again? He paid for a membership. Now he is banned. Is he refunded? Or what?

IDK, I don't have an answer. I'm just laying things out as I see them as to our options and the pros/cons of each.

How about an adfree subscription model?

  • Voat makes money on every user, directly or through ads
  • users greatly opposed to ads would have an alternative method to support Voat
  • users who can't/won't pay for Voat can still have a place in the conversation.

It maximises everyone's options while enabling two fairly reliable types of revenue for the site.

I like your idea quite a bit.

I figured it would need to be a combination of things. I still wonder how many active users we have. As that would com into figuring out how much a subscription would cost. Or at least give an idea. Since a part of that idea is also ads, and subs wouldn't be covering the whole.
