This goes beyond religion. Submissions that go against the circlejerks on Voat usually get more downvotes. This has a negative effect on small communities since it hurts their ability to grow.

In general I try to upvote any submission I see that looks like a good fit for the subverse it's posted in even if I disagree with it.

Yes. For example I haven't been downvoting atheist posts as a religious person. That's only going to make different communites hate eachother.

For that same reason I've stopped downvoting /v/meanwhile and /v/protectvoat even though I find both sides retarded (especially meanwhile). I realize that a downvote from me will just look like one of the other camps and egg the battle on further.

Downvotes are for spam and misinformation, and drama when a downvote won't cause more.

So while we are on /v/religion don't feel bad downvoting those videos in chinese. It's not like any of us will understand it and it is spam. But please on the other hand look to see if it happens to be halarious. They had a play posted earlier. It was like 3 hours of epic adam and eve stuff and crap out of revelations all done with singing and cheap Chinese special effects. I wish it hadn't gotten downvoted because voat would have loved it.

Appealing with logos and ethos to angsty teenagers. I don't know how well this will turn out for you :P

Those dumb teens who don't see value in superstition! Some don't even respect it! D:

The problem I always have with the edgy teen atheist (being someone who is a scientist) is that they don't realize when they are being just as retardedly stupid as the very people they criticize. I wish I had a dime for every time I saw someone talk about logic, sceince, and reason while being unlogical, unscientific, and unreasonable.

There are many atheist I respect, but when it comes to the average atheist on the internet I just want to bash my head on the keyboard.

...while forgetting "patos". Could you point out the "logos" part of the "respect superstition"-salespitch?

Couldn't agree more. You don't want people going to your subverse and shittting all over it, don't go to theirs and start a war.

Or in religious terms "Do unto others as you'd have done onto you"

I'd have others confront me with my insane ideas that I pretend are reasonable whenever possible. So you're telling me the opposite of what you wanted to.

I can't speak for Acheron, but it's pretty clear that OP doesn't have a problem with confrontation but with downvoting something and moving on because you have a problem with what other people chose to post when it's in an appropriate sub.

I agree. I'm an atheist from a deeply religious family. My father was a Baptist minister. I know what I believe, but if I forced by beliefs on my loved ones I would just alienate myself. Sometimes you just have to live and let live.

Thanks. If someone feels the urge to downvoat a religious post, maybe they should just block that sub so they won't be um.. 'triggered'. :-D

That is the big difference between here and the place that shall not be named. If I personally don't like a sub, I can block it so I never see it. Let those interested determine the value.

I'm not gonna block anything so fuck that. I come here for unfiltered content.

That said, I'm not gonna sit by and watch this place turn into a Jesus circlejerk if I can help it. Way to pat yourself on the back though. Great post.

Yes. Its called tolerance. It is the foundation of a secular society to let each person determine their moral action within the bounds of secular law.

definitely one of the most frustrating things I see, and it happens all the time. i hardly wanna write this comment because i get the feeling it might start an argument, but both sides of the religion vs atheist argument are arguing for things you cannot possibly prove. the debate is futile. just let people believe what they wanna believe </rant>.

science is the pursuit of the truth, not the Truth. ya know, people used to think the earth was the center of the universe and cigarettes were good for you. just sayin

Well said. Aren't we all, in the greater cosmic picture, just inchworms (or less!) at the end of the day?

Seriously. Who really knows how significant we really are at the end of the day? It's humbling the more you think about it and really makes you listen more than you preach.

I'm going to preface this with the fact that I would never downvote people just for having a different opinion than me. Moving on from that. . . . Not to be a dick but theism is making a positive claim about having the answers (You claim to have them, or at least your church does). You have burden of proof.

I understand if you're a deist (You know that there's a Deity), it's not particularly relevant if one pursues the truth about that because you're not making any claims about the will of said Deity. However, to be a theist (you know that there's a Deity and you know what said deity wants) you have to prove that the thing giving you authority exists, and then you have to prove that it's actually relayed that intent to you. This requires proof, because you're imposing it upon other people who have never seen, nor heard said Deity.

I'd be more than happy to keep my head out of what you believe if you would keep your collective heads out of what I believe. But you do not. The USA, the only officially secular country, is "One nation, under God". It has "In God We Trust" on its' currency. Churches are given tax breaks/exemption. Creationism is still taught in some states as being equally relevant to evolution. It's considered socially acceptable for priests to walk among the dying and ask them "Well, are you going to change your mind yet?" etc.

So, again, I would love nothing more than to "Just let people believe what they want to believe" but even if we disclude Islam which believes I should die because I don't follow the holy book (amongst other horrific immoral bullshit), other religions try to sway legislation, and they win more often than never. Don't push that double standard of "You should just leave us alone" onto me when the reverse is not true. I'd like to be left alone too, but the church won't leave me alone.

yeah i see where you're coming from. honestly i kinda hate the church sometimes (i mean, i love God and Christianity, but ya know...molestation and preaching "God hates fags"....not really Christian). so yeah, it gets annoying when they preach a form a Christianity that to be honest isn't very Christian at all, and i can't imagine how annoying that would be if it's not even something you believe in in the first place.

as for me preaching personally, i try to avoid it and try to start open conversations with individuals instead. that being said, it gets frustrating when people group me as "one of them" when being "one of them" is something i actively try to avoid. i don't believe that is the way to get someone to convert, and therefore i don't believe what God meant by missionary work. as for the burden of proof, i fully recognize that. the fact of the matter is i have experienced certain things things in my life that i cannot interpret any other way than being works of God. i believe what i believe because i have the burden of proof necessary to prove it to myself. i realize these may not be enough proof to others, so i leave them alone. if anyone would like me to elaborate and have a civilized discussion about it, PM me, but i'm not gonna put those kinda personal stories out there for the trolls to criticize.

You are a good person.

That's always been my biggest peeve with a lot of atheists - they can't just keep their disbelief to themselves, they have to ridicule the beliefs of other people for simply having them. If a dude worships his living room sofa, and that is what gets him up, working, paying taxes, and being a good person, let him fuckin' have it. So long as he's not trying to shove his belief in sofa down everyone's throat, he's not hurting anyone and it's keeping him motivated.

I'm also atheist, and I agree. There are posts that are clearly spam, and posted into random subs sometimes, and I downvoat those.
