Never underestimate the laziness of people. I literally see people ask, on social media, daily about the weather.... They could have looked it up faster but instead sm is their first, and usually only, recourse. While established people/companies in your business may not use sm to find a service provider you can bet name exposure to new people has at least some limited return to any industry.

The only value it would have then is a link to my website correct with some extremely basic information right?

I never ever found a company through social media. I avoid social media advertisement because I cannot differentiate between SPAM, imposters and the real thing. A company web site that is where I go to.

There are a lot of businesses for which certain social media sites do nothing. But each social media site has a different purpose, and they can be utilized in different ways depending on the overall goals of your public relations strategy.

Pro tip: public relations =/= publicity. Public relations is how you relate to your publics, whether they be internal, external, small groups or large.

Let's say you are a B2B manufacturer and you want a new client. You are right--the people looking for a manufacturer are not looking on facebook. They are part of a different "public" from your facebook audience.

But who is in your facebook public? Who would like a facebook page for a company like that? It's usually going to be employees, their families/friends, and other local businesses.

With that in mind, this company could leverage facebook to help raise their profile in a community, metro area or even state by showcasing participation in local events and charities as a means of building brand awareness, which can in turn serve to recruit better quality candidates who want to be a part of a socially responsible organization that values both work and life.

There's no sense in posting stuff on facebook for the sake of posting stuff. If your marketing team doesn't get that, your marketing team isn't doing its job.

The ROI of social media for businesses is rarely directly measured in dollars (unless you are a consumer retail business and you offer coupons or coupon codes for liking your page).

I agree with you, we don't have a marketing or sales team, our business model is not short on demand currently we have to turn away customers to keep our growth reasonable.

whether it will drive business depends on your business but its good to have a presence for when someone inevitably posts a complaint so you have an official SM presence that can respond
