No, reddit is authoritarian and loves censorship. That goes completely against the most basic liberal ideals.

EDIT: well, TIL that my definition of "liberal" is different from Americans' definition of "liberal". Just to make myself totally clear: I'm what you call a "classical liberal".

Liberal vs Conservative and Authoritarian vs Libertarian can be treated as separate axes.

This is completely true. A lot of people don't understand that.

They are perpendicular axes in political science. This is something that confuses/angers extremists who are interested in discrediting their opposition by painting their opponents with politically charged labels like "liberal" or "conservative." There are libertarian socialists and libertarian anarchists, just like there are authoritarian socialists and authoritarian conservatives.

I have been fighting that battle since I came to voat. Liberal has different applications, and in the modern American political realm, OP was using the word correctly.

The left is liberal in this sense. Telling anyone anything different, is doing everyone involved a disservice. Words are best used to define things approprietly, when you start throwing in all this stupid bs about what the word means outside of a the specific context, it's confusing for no reason.

I liberally give out upvotes.

Hilary is a liberal, in a purely modern political sense.

Hilary is not a liberal (when comparing authoritarian to liberal government).

Someone has to go saying liberal vs conservative doesn't make sense every time.

Found the Classical Liberal. JK, you are 100% correct.

[–] Chiefpacman 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

He's right, but out of context. In this case OP was using liberal specifically to label the American left, as it has been done for over 30 years.

Liberal vs Authoritarian, yes. Liberal vs conservative, yes. Both uses of the word liberal here mean different things. No need to throw in synonyms when OP's intent was clear

Exactly. For a while now there has been a set of intolerant, authoritarian cowards using the cover of 'liberalism' to push their abhorrent agenda. Fascists in Liberals clothing, if you like.

I think we should stop using the word liberal to describe these people. As you say, they are not liberals by any stretch of the imagination. I have started using the term Progressive.

I feel like I've taken crazy pills, but yeah. If you would of told me 6 months ago I would take trump seriously, think the media was colluding to push a narative and obama was not taking terrorism seriously I would of told you to get the fuck out.

I still support sanders.... to an extent. After Black Lives Matter shit on him and he was too weak to stand up for himself and supporting justice4jamar, I have doubts he'll be strong enough to get anything done. I like the idea of free college, but there needs to be some standard for what we are paying for degrees in. we don't need more lib arts graduates and well be flushing money down the drain with bullshit feel good degrees. I will vote trump before I ever vote shillary

He is about 90% right. I think the US needs to be able to do something with the jihadists, like declare them traitors and deport them, or execute them. Enough is enough.

Taking in refugees from a country where many of the civilians sympathize with jihadist ideals and hate the US and the West is incredibly ignorant, and only a PC twit could ever think this was a great idea.

If you think the bailouts were bullshit and the complete corporate takeover of our government has to be reversed before any of your other personal causes can move forward, then Trump is not your man. Sure he's funding his own campaign but don't let him bullshit you. He didn't make all that money selling lemonade. He is beholden to other billionaires who helped him get richer. The fact that he isn't taking donations from them specially to his campaign fund doesn't mean anything. The guy is as "corporate power above all" as they get.

How can you go from Sanders to Trump? That makes you sound gullible. In any case, you should be suspicious of Trump. I doubt he'll change many policies for the good. He'll continue to expand the powers of the state in the name of security. He might be tougher on immigration, but it will come at an exorbitant price tag. That's sound like a lot of waste for a businessman, but I doubt he'll consider it a loss. He'll probably make it easier for the worst kind of corporations to keep making money, but it's unlikely to make America stronger. I just don't see how he is different in any of his policies.

[–] Ohooh 1 points 2 points (+3|-1) ago  (edited ago)

This is foolish. I'm a Trump supporter and Sanders is still my third choice based on his lack of ties to the elite. Trump -> Rand -> Sanders for me.

You're gullible to have bought into this "us vs them" narrative.

Also,

He'll probably make it easier for the worst kind of corporations to keep making money,

An unbelievably ridiculous statement. I imagine you haven't read any of Trump's policies, books, or listened to his rallies.

I like Sanders ideas, but he is weak as fuck. Who is he going to intimidate when people say no to his ideas. A president is essentially a beggar of legislation. You think Bernie is going to have the balls to play bathroom politics? I like his ideas. I like that he is not owned. I liked Barack Obama in 2008 for the same reason. I no longer care for Obama now.

Trump is vague on his policies. Media takes out of context and tries to distort everything he says because they are not used to a day and age where people can look at the source material themselves. When you see what the media is lying about for yourself you no longer trust the bullshit they report. Trump will take any leader/media outlett to the matt. I don't like some of his policy ideas, but a president can't waive a magic wand and make law. A president can use their bully pulpit to intimidate, ask for legislation and veto parts of bills they don't like. I think Trump gives so little fucks he wont care about media backlash from vetos and will call out shit congressmen and senators. I honestly believe he can lead.. I know it sounds crazy, especially given where I stood half a year ago, but what I have seen transpire over half a year has changed my mind.

Reddit is corporatist. All that PC shit comes from advertisers and human resources clowns. Being non-offensive is all about increasing revenue and reducing liability in case of lawsuits. It has nothing to do with liberalism. I know of no liberal philosopher who doesn't encourage the tolerance of and open discussion of controversial subjects. It has always been the authoritarian right and the anti-liberal left (socialism, excluding democratic socialism).

Truth is Western civilization has allowed itself to be tricked into letting it's kids be brainwashed by TV ads and the culture of human resources. The people of the world are mere resources for its leaders. We've done ourselves in by means of distraction. Western civilization, or at least the American Empire, may even collapse before we destroy the environment.

The good news is, the plebians of Rome survived after its fall. Sure, with a significantly lower standard of living, but they got on.

Then, their cult religion rose to rule everything 1000 years later. So, there's that.

After Rome crumbled, Europe took about 1000 years to get back to where the romans left off, with 90% of people slaving away as serfs. That wasn't a life worth living, all they had was their belief in a better afterlife.

For reals I pissed off a liberal on Reddit today and now he is going back and replying on all my comments for like months at a time trying to dox me, all because I didn't fit his narrative of what a minority should think or feel or experience.

They think all minorities should be blind followers of the left.

I wish you could see who you were talking to on reddit like you can with Facebook. It would help you know whether or not to take someone seriously.

What I hate about reddit is how quick they are about banning people. That's a rookie mistake for a message board. All it does is keep people who agree with the circlejerk around and discourage controversial ideas. The place is an idiocracy, and the fact the site hasn't done anything about it speaks volumes.

But isn't that what the voting system tends to do (here and there)? Only difference is they are very ban happy at reddit, and they're big enough to get away with it. I predict voat could end up down a similar path if it gets big enough.

Nah, that shit is discouraged here and they've planned for it. Voat is the more centrist/Republican version of reddit. I have an easy time getting upvotes here. On reddit, I was constantly downvoted and harassed by ignorant SJW's. I'm glad to be rid of them now.

I agree, I consider myself to be a liberal(although by reddit's standards I'd probably be closer to a moderate) but the few times I visited the politics subreddit, I noticed that it was insanely left wing, even by my standards.

I think that's why so many people on the left love Milo Yiannopoulos. Because there is less and less room for the freethinking liberal these days.
