The Enlightenment happened despite religion, not because of it. If in fact religion had something to do with the Enlightenment, what was the purpose of the dark ages? An individual's accomplishments shouldn't be attributed to their religion. Their abysmal mistakes due to them following religious ideology is another matter.

Scholasticism happened during the last half of the Dark Ages, right? It led right into the Renaissance. The black plague left people feeling awfully abandoned by their God so they stopped listening to the church and took up their own research.

*The Reformation had its role too. A lot of stuff led right up to the insignificance of the church I guess, namely corruption.
