The hatred comes from people who can't relate. Some people just can't see that the people they hate are just trying to live. I think it's fine to direct your hatred at specific beliefs which can be pretty fucked up especially in a country like Afghanistan, but those beliefs are largely the result of how fucked up of a country Afghanistan is, and that's not entirely the locals' fault.

A lot of it is merely projecting their self-hate on to some 'enemy' as an outlet.

Couldn't agree more. Nice to see someone else on here who has some fucking empathy for their fellow human beings.

Its easy to get caught up in the hate, its so fucking prevalant in the military. I was like that as well until i actually interacted with the populace, both iraq and afghanistan. I think the culture shock is too much for both sides. Us thinking these animals live in squalor, and they see an occupying force that wastes so much. Either its just a fucked up situation. It hard to define what the purpose was/is. I picked up soo many dead and placed them on birds to be sent to people like that guy, it feels so mechanical now.

We are capable of having hatred for a group, religion, ideology etc while still having empathy or sympathy for individuals.

If the thread you're referring to is the one I saw, it sounds equally likely that the father would have had a bomb strapped to his chest to blow up the soldiers in this kind of situation.

Assuming innocence, it is unfortunate that this man and his daughter got caught up in an area that led to her death. The people (of any place) should be left to their own devices, without interference. There was a lot in that thread about the native people who didn't know what was going on and just wanted to be left alone.

If they only lived by themselves, didn't make themselves a threat to other people/places/cultures, and just kept on doing whatever they do in their own space...I doubt most of us would give a shit what anyone else does. It's when anyone tries to push their own ideas on other people that they create hatred and hostility.

You use the term they as if all these people are doing this. From reading that thread it seems pretty obvious that you're referring to the minority, and most sane decent human beings just want to farm their land and raise their family, and not be at war with the country that wants their oil.
