Not sure if you want an actual historical answer or something like "it all started in the X year with the introduction of this..." but I figured I'd say my piece anyway. Most people are followers and it's been this way forever. When the message that they're following is pure than it's actually beneficial to humanity that they're like this. But when the message that they follow is evil than obviously the opposite happens.

To go deeper into the minds of these people, I believe that pop culture draws in boring, unimaginative people that have never created anything (or at least anything worth a damn) in their life. They're so excited for the "new" thing because they don't have a sense of quality and are easily impressed by even the most generic garbage. Add to that the fact that it's so easy digest pop culture and you can see why these failed humans are so drawn to the light. Life's short, YOLO, they say, and anything that goes against that mindset is a threat to them because it's a reminder that they're degenerates. That's why their response to people like us is always "Get a life", because they can't comprehend anything more than mindless hedonism. They're confused as to why we don't just join in on the fun and listen to the latest Cardi B song about her butthole and worship faggots and interracial couples on tv. I mean it's so easy and it feels so good...

It's cheap, requires 0 effort/time investment to participate in, and it feels good, why wouldn't you engross yourself in pop culture?
