That's what I'm saying. Removing the description allows the player to plug in whatever "reason" for the appearance they desire as opposed to cementing an event in the character's history. While this is fine for player-created characters (think Elder Scrolls), characters following a narrative need to have a reason for everything they do and everything about them thoroughly explained in the story - regardless if those characters are NPCs or player-controlled characters.
