It's one thing for DINKs to not have life insurance, but if you have dependents it's a must because no matter whom dies you're either replacing the primary breadwinner or hiring a full time nanny to substitute for the stay at home spouse. Neither is cheap.
Honestly, i saw it more as transfership of liabilities. If one dies and there is still a house, mortgage, you would leave that person liable for it all. A very poor, short term thinking if i ever saw one, but some people live by that rule

I concurr, not having life insurance with inequal incomes, etc in marriage with a death is a recipe for disaster
