Karl Marx was indeed a great sociologist - but he would say he was a historian and economist. One third of the modern school of sociology is based on works that follow his methods. Consider, if you will, that more than 1/2 of the entire planet Earth has attempted to put his teachings into practice and all attempts have met with failure, in many cases catastrophic failure. I highly recommend that you read his works directly, if for no other reason than to know the mind of your enemies.

Marx's approach to science is very seductive, precisely because it is so very informative. It is all too easy to fall into the trap of thinking that it is the final word when everything seems to make so much sense. Unfortunately, for Marx, and half of the world, he is wrong on many of the most critical findings. Meanwhile, while his work is very useful in tracking human behaviors and the various social problems that emerge from that, marxist based solutions to those problems have inevitably met with failure every time.

Simply put, understanding a problem doesn't mean you understand the solution to that problem.

I can tell from your words above they are not going to be teaching sociology. This class is pure Communist brainwashing.

What I can tell you is this, since you are not a professor, anything you might say on the actual validity of these teachings will be discounted outright. If you challenge the system directly you will lose, for it is designed to weed you out. If you wish to stay you must play along and be as covert as possible about it. They must see you brainwashed. That means you need to learn it so you can spew it back out on the exam.

Is it worth it? The degree itself is useful, if for no other reason than the many career doors that open which you cannot otherwise access without a degree. The training at this stage is still introductory in nature. They are building the conceptual tools which will be used to conduct more advanced works later on. Should you go on to the Masters and PhD levels you will then once again be asked to begin thinking for yourself, accumulating your own data, and publishing your own findings. The bullshit only gets radically worse at that stage.

Understand that very few students actually proceed to those levels. Most who survive will get a degree, or a master's degree, and depart for a career away from the school. The ones who stay and go on to perpetuate the system as the next generation of teachers are themselves trapped within their own sheltered bubble Potemkin reality away from the real world, to the point that they really have no understanding of it.

These are the people who are teaching you now. Calling them out on it will only incur their wrath.
