It would be meant to show how much of our interpersonal communication gets lost because of masks. It's making people sick in the head, not be able to 'read' the faces of others. It's especially cruel to children who need to see visual cues and facial expressions to learn how to properly function in our society.

The Roman gladiators would often wear helmets that completely obscured the face. This wasn't done so much for protection but as a way to dehumanize the combatants so that they would not hesitate to plunge a sword into someone who may have been a friend back in the barracks.
