The camps did exist, but they were work camps, as you might already know, manual labor is worse than death to the jews.

When you understand that, everything will make sense, the transfering between camps, the tattoos, the clothing, etc.

Did people die at these camps? Sure, many due to typhus, and many other due to the allies bombing the food supply, Zyklon-B was used to kill the lice which carried typhus, also the reason why many of them were bald.
