I don't entirely disagree with you. But staring into a blue light to play a game that entices you to react quickly to stimuli and to value accomplishing goals that have no real world impact certainly could have serious downsides. Watching sports on TV can also have serious downsides. And of course both mainstream sports and mainstream vidya are controlled.

Who would want to watch joggers pointlessly give each other brain damage when you could be interactive and consequential on the same screen?
Playing sports > playing games > watching sports > watching TV
