No, it has a lot to do with ratings because of advertisements. Companies sponsor media outlets and help fund them and assist in their operation because they can run ads for their products and services. More ratings means more companies will want to push products on those media platforms during the coverage, and everyone makes more money.

Charlottesville did help divide and polarize people more through lies, but it is foolish to ignore all the people that made tons of money off of it because of all the publicity, which is demonstrated through increased ratings.
