FAT 32 specifically, which all of them are, it's actually part of the SD card standard. Although you can get "multimedia cards" (MMC) which is essentially the same thing without the formatting, then you format it yourself.

You are right, of course. To be even more pedantic, eMMC is a different standard, though they overlap on basic operations. Most of the eMMC I've encountered come from the mfr programmed to their erase value (usually, oddly all 0's despite what we know about flash). In post-production, however, they're often written with data, so by the time you get to them, they're usually not blank.
