Every year we were taught the same story over and over again but there was one teacher that said there was a band and sports teams and then quickly stopped talking about it. She never brought it up again and always changed the subject when kids asked but I never forgot that one tiny crack in the wall.
Doesn't surprise me. They were labor camps, and it pays to have your workers in a decent mood.
It honestly is just such a strange story about gas chambers and giant transportation networks to kill people. If you look at every real genocide in history, it's been done either via starvation (ie Holodomor, Kazakhstan) or shootings in the streets/fields (ie Rwanda, Cambodia). You don't conduct mass killings in secret; you do it openly to keep your enemies demoralized and fleeing and give your extremists something to rally around. You secretly disappear your political enemies, but at the point where you want to kill millions, you're going to find a more public and faster/cheaper way of doing it.
I mean, North Korea is a giant, open air prison and they have all sorts of (really bad) art and music. By "all sorts", I of course mean solely propaganda.
By "all sorts", I of course mean solely propaganda.
Which is totally unlike here in the west where the vast majority of art and music is also really shitty and is propaganda made to demoralize the native population and embolden state sponsored invaders.
Not at all. There is a lot of variety here and nowhere near all of it is any kind of propaganda. I don't know how you could claim that. Maybe the stuff on the radio is shitty but I wouldn't know be a I stopped listening to the radio years ago.

Kids seriously taught the exact shame shit from the same books every year of schooling. It was a wait...what? moment I never forgot.
I grew up in a very, very Jewish part of the country too.

Does anyone have a source on this? I never knew about this before. This would be good to use for future debates.

Even Elie Wiesel's book admits there were classical music concerts in camps.

They played Beethoven's "bagatelles," which is french for "things of little importance."
