Nothing is impossible, but the longer this goes on, obviously the more creativity and/or hard work any workable solution is going to require on behalf of real Canadians.
I know this just sounds like an American promoting the United States' interests, but I think of what I'm about to tell you more as a Southerner promoting states' rights interests within our union. I think it would be best for all of our interests if the western Canadians did in fact consolidate with the United States, and here's why:
1) They would be able to immediately establish a hard border with the rest of Canada and anything/everything coming out of it, presumably enforced by US Border Patrol and ultimately the US military, with which the new states' own soldiers (Albertans, etc.) would most certainly be deployed.
2) Your provincial government can immediately create its own state constitution and establish its own state government however it sees fit to run, answerable to its own citizens.
3) New, very conservative senators and representatives will take office in the United States Congress, and if you western Canadians back our conservative, originalist, states' rights "interpretation" of the Constitution in Congress, just as people in Montana and Idaho do (and just go ask the people down there about it if you don't understand what it's about -- they're basically your neighbors anyway) you will help us keep control over these raging liberal cities.
Plus you'll have more rights as a sovereign state in our federal union than you do as a province of British Canada, because let's face it, you're still in the British Commonwealth and the Queen signed your Constitution to give royal ascent to it.
4) Speaking of people on Montana, Idaho, the Dakotas, etc., from an outsider's perspective, you guys look like you share a pretty similar culture. I know, you're Canadian, and you'll always have that Canadian heritage and be the "Canadian states," but it's cold as fuck up there and you all live like white Eskimos.
I don't think Canadians would benefit from an open border with the US. The US has around 10x the crime rate, and Canada currently has more favorable demographics.

There definitely are challenges on the horizon, but it's way too soon to write off the country.

Think about it. @Braintrust
