Whilst travelling in Nepal about 6 years ago, I was working in a small guesthouse who was in TripAdvisor's top ten rank for that city. They called us up and asked if we wanted to upgrade the page for a fee, with the idea it would give us more control and encourage more visitors. After declining, the ranking slipped into the 30's. I haven't trusted them since.

It's basically "pay our "protection" fee, or we start posting negative reviews to tank your rating."
