There's a huge misunderstanding perpetuated by this article. How much vegetable material can be had for the same amount of protein is irrelevant because that's all crop land. The only efficient way to turn untended grassland into food is by letting an animal graze and then eating the animal. And there's a huge amount of untended grassland out there. Most of it is not suitable for crops.
