Yeah, they had a referendum, and the citizens clearly voted to leave. Those who wanted to remain, now called the remainers, have been working to undo that outcome ever since. The previous Prime Minister, and the Speaker of the House, are both openly remainers, so the ruling party was delaying brexit again and again. Eventually the previous Prime Minister was pushed from office for failure to negotiate an exit deal with the EU. She wasn't really trying, she was faking it the whole time.

She would go negotiate a ridiculous deal, bring it back to parliament, and it would be voted down, so they would push back the brexit date and return to the negotiations - all in an attempt to buy time and distance from the referendum, giving time for the media to work it's propaganda, hoping for an opinion change in the electorate. They did this for two years.

Any illusion that the opinion of the electorate had turned against brexit was shattered by Nigel Farage and his brexit party when he recently crushed the EU elections. This forced Prime Minister May to step down, because she had clearly lost the mandate of the people, and cleared the way for Boris as the new Prime Minister. Boris says we are leaving immediately if we don't get a deal in the next couple of months - no more pushing back the Brexit date. Boris fears having Farage gut the Tory party as well, which is the likely outcome if Britain fails to leave the EU. Farage is ready to run brexit candidates for every seat in the House, and may become Prime Minister himself.

That has lead us to the recent shenanigans. Understand that the only reason they are in this current FUBAR situation, with a now totally dysfunctional lame duck government, is the Speaker of the House allowed the unconstitutional vote to take place when he should have ruled against it - because he is a rabid remainer as well, appointed under the previous Prime Minister. He has now announced his resignation, and his lack of shame for his actions. He violated parliamentary tradition, and like the traitor Tories who crossed the isle, he betrayed his own party. Traditionally, the Speaker of the House is supposed to assist the government, and is appointed by the government. It is not the Speaker's job to assist the opposition to cripple the government via unconstitutional means. This may be the end of his political career, certainly as a Tory.

That's my take on what happened - it may not be entirely accurate.
