It worked for Rome until they stop conquering. If you really interested in this you should watch the jolly heretic on youtube. He talks a lot about how our society is dying and what it takes to keep a society going. The basics of his work is you have to have a strong sense of positive ethnocentric (strong community) and a strong sense of negative ethnocentric (fear of the other). Rome worked because it had a ok positive ethnocentric but a very very strong negative ethnocentric so the groups without the country never in fought (until they stopped conquering).

Will look him up, thanks. I've been reading a lot from r/darkenlightenment recently. Good reading when you have intermittent mobile data!

The overarching theme seems to be a strong in group preference creates social cohesion. America used to have it and growing up I thought they were a bit too loud and obnoxious, but I miss seeing that in those guys now (I'm Aussie).
