They can't control video games like they did with TV shows and movies. Those forms of media, the audience is passive. Video games are interactive. The player has a say in how the story goes. And since games are expensive, players quickly become very discerning about which games they buy. In the end, video games demand more from the player than TV/movies require of the viewer. And that's why they can't control it like they did with the old media. Players WILL fuck up your story simply because they can.

And quicktime events. They're trying to remove all puzzle-solving, critical and strategic thinking from big mainstream titles.

They only want interactive TV/movies or crime simulators. Or at best, something like Minecraft which burns off enormous amounts of creative energy.

american developers revolutionized the culture of video games, not the other way around. nintendo was adamantly opposed to adult themed video games for decades and still are to a degree. even today, nintendo very rarely puts out rated mature games. while american companies were creating games like doom, quake, and mortal kombat that featured blood (digitally replaced with "sweat" in western releases by nintendo) in them, nintendo went out of their way to make their versions of american made games as "family friendly" as possible with ridiculous amounts of censorship. sega was much more supportive of the artistic integrity of the creators, but eventually lost the console wars due to poor sales.
