Appalachia was once a thriving state of it's own.

Most of the locals lost their land rights when the industrial barons discovered it and coerced the states with large money deals, West Virginia in particular.

Yet another glowing sign that pioneer stock Americans have been systematically marginalized for quite some time, starting with the rebel south and then Appalachia.

Did any of them do anything to stop it out of curiosity?

Look into The Battle Of Blair Mountain. Coal miners put on red sashes and fought against (((mine owners))) and (((mine owners))) brought in the US military and fired upon US citizens. There were other battles, as well. Many land owners were murdered or came up missing. The same thing is happening right now with the major gas lines going through Appalachia. You dont own your land and gas companies can put their gas lines on it anytime they want to. There was also the Battle of Matewan.
