Voat is all things considered fairly robust thanks to the 4 consecutive years of constant attacks that highlighted where things could be improved. So anyone with the technical skills to take it down would surely know that taking down a single topic on a site would be impossible without taking down the whole site. And that the targeted topic would light up like a beacon as a result of it.
What I'm getting at, was it as decoy? I've only superficially skimmed the PizzaGate topic in question, but I didn't see an obvious nuclear bomb in it..
It could of course also be that the perpetrators indeed was targeting that specific topic but didn't plan out on Putt pointing towards it..
I dunno I'm just thinking out loud here.

It is a possibility. What Zestyclose_Marketing said is also a possibility. It is also a possibility that the people who targeted that specific thread aren't actually that smart. We have no way of truly knowing.

Link or quick recap?
Anyway my rationally is that we have previously had script kiddies trying to attack Voat with roughly the same impact as when /pol/ raided us. No one even noticed. So for someone taking us down for +12 hours they would surely be in a different league. They would absolutely know what traces of their destruction they left behind.
Again I dunno, but there's just something about it that feels off to me..
