In a SHTF situation, gold and silver aren't very useful. If you live through it, you might come out on top with our gold and silver stash. If you and several others don't have anything to eat, you're all not going to be interested in gold and silver.

Gold is an insurance policy against economic collapse especially collapse of the US dollar. Gold isn't for a scenario where total all out war breaks out, it's to retain some material value for when things calm down if they just go to shit temporarily and mostly economically. Of course civil unrest will follow if the economy collapses as production grinds to a halt but that doesn't mean everything permanently disintegrates. So yes you're right but arms defend the goods stored, and I also am in the process of saving water and rain collection and standing water purification, long life food, seeds/tools/knowledge for agriculture, skills to preserve food (canning, pickling, salting) and the materials needed, first aid skills and medical suppies (basic medicines, gauze, needles, tourniequets etc), solar+crank powered radio flashlight, tents/sleeping bags/tarps, fishing line/lures+hooks/rods, tools for snares+traps, extra batteries, propane, lots of strong cords, and other misc goods. Trust me I am trying to be ready for as much as humanly possible. I reckon it's reasonable to survive elements, disease, hunger and thirst, and other animals and people for my family of soon to be 6 but I pray if things must get bad at least delay a few years to let my little ones grow up some.
