Hawaii is an archipelago and in the past 30 years has gotten really crowded. Even as a tourist attraction it's not that enjoyable anymore and it's fucking expensive. I'd only go there if I also had a lot of astronomy experience to go with comp sci and they offered truckloads of cash. If you want tropical and inexpensive try Florida but be wary of the gators. There are also some nice up and coming spots in North Carolina which has an area called Research Triangle Park, where a lot of legacy tech companies do some business.
