An open-hand clap over an ear looks less "harsh" but can be far more damaging. Done with both hands over both ears simultaenously, sufficient pressure can be generated, potentially fatal.

It generates air pressure that has nowhere to go and can rupture your eardrums. Obviously it's exceedingly rare for any opponent to just stand there and let it happen, but it's nevertheless possible.

Lol I’ve never heard of it being fatal but getting your ears boxed is definitely extremely annoying and debilitating.

As far as open hand strikes go, Bas Rutten (the king of liver strikes) has spoken extensively of his preference for them over closed fists. As you can see, applied correctly such strikes can be extremely effective.
