Punching is a quite pea-brained and ill-advised fighting tactic anyway. Learn some judo or freestyle wrestling takedowns and holds and even throws. If you must strike, use an open palm. Strike soft fleshy targets (like this lardo’s belly) only if you use a fist at all. Punching someone is generally just going to sap your energy and break your hand not to mention put you in vulnerable positions.

An open-hand clap over an ear looks less "harsh" but can be far more damaging. Done with both hands over both ears simultaenously, sufficient pressure can be generated, potentially fatal.

You can certainly break you hand by punching with fists. You rarely see it in Youtube fights bcs you don't see the aftermath, but there are plenty in the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championships. In BK2, one guy broke both of his hands. And I suppose most of us know guys who have broken hands or knuckles.
While I don't eschew hitting with knuckles entirely, its use is target, distance, and angle-specific. You should also be able to use hammer fists (targeting many places around the head but this is very dangerous so don't fuck around with it), elbows, the outside of the forearm (used against, for example, the side and back of the neck as someone tries to take your waist), fingers and thumbs (against eyes and throat).
Hitting with open hands is great from all kinds of distances, angles, and targets but few understand it well. You can use various surfaces - the meaty inside edges and heel of the palm, of course, but you can also use the "stretched palm", where you strike with the inner surface of the palm which is stretched to form a trampoline-like surface by pulling back the fingers and thumb. The hand is relaxed along its trajectory and stretched just before contact. This is a very powerful way to hit - test it on your own chin, jaw, and head - and is quite safe for the hands even when contacting hard portions of the head, such as the mastoid process behind the ear.

You know who fights using off-balance spastic haymakers and quickly tire themselves out?
Go watch some World Star fight videos and you’ll see.

Lol I’ve never heard of it being fatal but getting your ears boxed is definitely extremely annoying and debilitating.
