I think the batteries are more "if the world ends I'll have lights" type of deal,
as far as the panels, yeah net metering laws lobbied by the utility companies certainly limit their viability as grid replacement in urban areas, & of course they're not impervious to wear but they DO "convert" light to DC (of course this isn't the technicality, but in essence)
