Because they are expensive, can break easily, and the effects of the chemicals involved in their production is extremely harmful to the earth. They are a bandaid, a gimmick for people to rally on. "Free electricity! If the world ends I'll have lights!" It's bullshit. That is putting too much investment into one singular object. I hope you will be able to use those if the sun is blotted from the sky.

I think the batteries are more "if the world ends I'll have lights" type of deal, as far as the panels, yeah net metering laws lobbied by the utility companies certainly limit their viability as grid replacement in urban areas, & of course they're not impervious to wear but they DO "convert" light to DC (of course this isn't the technicality, but in essence)
