A while back I learned that music can trigger dopamine release and that's where a lot of the satisfaction comes from. It's potentially addictive. People back in the day didn't listen to music every day, so i stopped doing it, and boy has it made a difference.
I listen to music maybe 2 or 3 days a week whenever I'm in a particular mood for it. I can drive 8 hours and not listen to one second of radio. Because of this, when I do listen to music, it sounds amazing. I love music. I find that music is best when listened to in moderation.

Mixed true and false.
People didn't listen to RECORDED music every day. Some didn't hear music often at all.
Work songs, however were commonplace. People on farms, ships, and factories would often sing all day, believe it or not. The songs dealt with the work and would keep pace for various tasks.

Interesting experiment you have though. (I was just listening to music, to answer your question.)

I feel like singing doesnt get one the same personal response as listening to music though. I wonder if there are any studies on this. Like, the satisfaction of singing vs listening to music or something like that. Idk, I'm in bed though. Maybe ill check tomorrow.

Instead of taking antidepressants, I play the drums. Works 10x better.

There is music constantly playing in my head. I get to choose whether to listen to that or listen to something from a speaker all day, every day

I haven't listened to music in months. No time.
EDIT: I did listen to some old-school RHCP the other day tho. Still better than all the shit they've done since the early 2000's.

It comes in spurts. I can spend all day listening to a song or two and then go weeks without listening to any. And I listened even less in earlier years.
Personally I'm not much into escapism and tend to do things to broaden my horizons or keep a pulse on what is going on. That includes music.
