Paternal DNA test are illegal in France and you could go one year in Jail for doing it, because "fatherhood is a social construct".

That's a whole zeitgeist of this kind of madness. But you are right, people in France are sick of this.

Yeah I'd heard about the paternity test situation. I honestly thought that the French were ok with this because all I ever see in videos about them are these sleek urban people. I knew intellectually that France actually had a vast rural population (who are also famously way easier to get along with than Parisians) but I never made the full connection on what or how that divide actually worked.

Now I see it is a lot like the US. Basically high population areas are more "liberal" and rural areas are more "conservative."

The really sad thing is that this divide is normal and even logical. In high population zones you have to deal with and tolerate more people on a daily basis thus you end up "liberal." While in the country the pace is slower, things don't change as much, people live by their routines (especially farmers who simply cannot function without set routines) and thus they are "conservative," in outlook. This divide has always existed and society can usually manage it. Until some agency comes along and exacerbates the situation.

It reminds me a lot of how the incoming hebrews joined with the rural canaanites to conquer the cities of Canaan.
