Let me make my perspective clear then.

I think the US constitution is sort of the center of the nation. It is the binding framework that holds this place together. It is the foundation. The only reason there is a US is because of that document. One of the major underlying causes of our current strife is based on how little respect we have for the legal framework that created our nation in the first place.

A lot of people have this ill-thought out position that the nation is the people itself or the government. But this notion falls away quickly when you analyze how many communities would go their own way or outright make war on neighboring communities right here in the US if they got the chance. What keeps people from splitting off or fighting their neighbors is this idea that we are in a country together. That idea is based squarely on the legal framework that has created the relationships between our communities and our government.

Ultimately as long as some shred of the Constitution is in force we can keep our republic. But as that founding basis of our civilization is eroded and allowed to decay we drift further and further apart. This man's position is squarely rooted in that reality. The civil strife we say today is another example.

There is a lot more to constitutions in general that should be discussed but I doubt anybody has any time for it. It's worth noting that ancient historians like Plutarch and Polybius and Thucydides and Xenophon discussed the various constitutions and traditions of the nations around them at length in their works. All of the greatest societies in history have had strong constitutions of the power dividing type and each one of those civilizations has been overthrown when they turned their backs on their founding principles.
