Free speech is the social and cultural principle (and associated practices) of having a broad tolerance for a wide variety of expression and, in particular, the expression (and examination) of a wide variety of opinions, beliefs, thoughts, philosophies, and facts. It is particularly expressed by (but conceptually distinct from) many legal edicts like the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, but is also easily extended by simple analogy beyond them, particularly into the realms of private institutions and also even to a degree into one's personal life and conduct.
