Never thought about it like that, but it sort of makes sense. I wonder about people who can't survive without listening to music or a podcast and if it's the same thing.

Difficult to think outside of the box that you are in, and I'm well aware I am in one. We're sort of in a golden cage of luxuries, aren't we?

A bit yes, it's always hard to break out of that bubble, especially if you're comfortable or lazy which is also encouraged more often then not.

You're correct about podcasts, but you should look at it as an equivalent to Nicoderm for someone quitting smoking. It takes longer than going Cold Turkey, but you're way less of a prick to everyone around you while you're detoxing.

I listen to radio and podcast all the time and I don't think it's the same thing at all.

I'm a news junky and like keeping up with what happen and I like learning new things. And I disagree with @Vic_V the reason men watch sportsball is because of our genetic need for tribalism. It's a passive way of let go of our warrior instincts, that's why teams become "our" teams, that's why chants are reminiscent off War chants, and the men dress up and put face paint on like our ancestors put on war paint.

There's also a reason typically the alpha men are the ones who are fanatical about sports and the SoyBoys hate sports. The first is in touch with nature and reality and the latter hate physical beauty, perfection and competition because ultimately they hate themselves.

Simply Sportsball = Tribalism

I would say it depends on the radio station or podcast, there's definitely some that are just for background noise, but I agree with the tribalism analysis, it's a great way to get a lot of people to let off steam in a way that never threatens anyone in government.

Did you know that the word "Gospel" originally meant "Good News from the War Front"?
How long do you think we've had news junkies?
