Slimgur was taken down via weaponized child porn. They uploaded it to the service then reported it to the hosting provider to cancel the account.

Hooktube got big enough for YouTube to notice them and lean on them with lawyers.

It wasn't a true alternative in the way that is not an alternative to reddit.

But it did do useful things, the embeds were much less restrictive and let you do whatever your device supports.

It also allowed easy downloading of video, and reduced the ease at which youtube could track views.
