I like the AR because it is more customizable... The AR and the AK shoot different ammo though. A better comparison is Ak vs Ar10. Im still gonna go AR.
Thing is what the ak is really .all about is reliability under extreme conditions that most shooters will never see.

AR is nice for pretty attachments, availability, and neato stuff. You can customize it as you see fit, interchange parts on the fly (barring optics),. 5.56 is a pussy round, though. AK is for reliabilty, and teaching the dumbest idiot how to maintain a gun. The originals were pretty shit, but the modern aftermarket is mostly solid, lots of improvements made. They are very simple as a platform. Also the AK has a better cartridge that would be much better suited in an improved action.
If you wanna get real spicy, get a 7.62x39 AR, get the improved firing pin and spring, the special banana mags, and you're good to go. Decorate as you would any other AR, the only special part is the bolt carrier group and upper machining. They're cheap as fuck right now, and you get a far superior round that was previously used on inferior hardware (technically speaking, not taking sides). They do require some doing to get running reliably, and the major part is replacing the standard AR firing pin with a more specialized one for the round. The OEM AR firing pin doesn't puncture steelcase very well, and that's 80% of the reason why jams and fail to fires happen with steel. If you're shortstroking, get a lighter buffertube spring and vice-versa.
I love combloc shit, but if you care about accuracy, go AR.

Because it also affects how it penetrates 7.62 brass primers. The default firing pin in most 7.62 AR configurations is the 5.56 pin. Personally I'd prefer a gun in a civil war scenario that doesn't pitch a fit about what I put into it. In a situation like that, Federal isn't always there for you.
Also some people aren't made of money and just want a cheap shooter.
Ammo availability, maintenance, that all sounds very troublesome. I think some nerve agents are shelf-stable and probably have a better use case in your scenario.

Why do you change the firing pin to handle shitty steel jacketed ammo when you can just use brass? I never have a problem with federal.
