Immigrants that stayed and contributed. Immigration today is sold as telecommute where you just take a job and mail the money home. If the hosting country isn't capitalizing that labor to improve the country it's likely improving 2 countries and completely depleting host resources.

Immigrants always sent money home.

Andrew Carnegie would save and scrape and send money back to Scotland in the late 19th century.

Carnegie would also go on to build in America. He didn't come here to mail it all "home". He came to make a new home and mail back just to take care while he saved to "send for" everyone.

it's not built on immigrants. People already living here in colonies built it. The first English colony in North America was established on Roanoke Island in 1585, in what is now North Carolina. About 200 years later, USA is created. The "we are nation of immigrants" is a statement created from the finest of horse manure. Immigration laws were not even enacted until 1875 when the US Supreme Court declared the regulation of immigration a federal responsibility.

Are you suggesting that no one moved here from 1585-1875, because there were no immigration laws?

Before that time, there was NO restrictions. We were advertising in Germany, Sweden, Norway, Poland. Come here, get free 40 acres of land! Vote immediately!

People who immigrated in the past assimilated and wanted to become American. The current wave of immigrants wants to overwhelm and replace us.

Saying that immigration is good because the USA was built by immigrants is like saying criminality is good because Australia was built by criminals.

Also don't forget the big difference between legal immigration, that has very strict rules, and illegal immigration. Legal immigrants came to America to become American and contribute to America, while illigal immigrants come to America not to become American nor to contribute to America.

So suddenly the progressive party wants to be conservative and respect tradition?

Also remember that the country of immigrants meme predates the modern welfare state. So, if you like social programs, you should not like open borders.

Remind them that Bernie was right- open borders is a Koch borthers proposal.
