There is a scripting language for Symbian OS called mShell. The API they had for it to take advantage of the hardware was very slick. I had wrote a little script to monitor for bluetooth ID's and notify if a certain name appears. I was also working on a script to record your phone call but Symbian OS prevented that. They restricted recording your mic while in use and I never found a way around that.

Good times.

Interesting, maybe it is a limitation of the E70.

EDIT: Looking this up it's all coming back to me. The mic wasn't restricted from recording but on the E70, using the mShell script to record it would play a beep at regular intervals throughout the recording. There were paid solutions but I couldn't find a free solution.
