I don’t know, having seen the public outrage in ‘68, (just a kid back then) against the VN war, The names of KIA/MIA that scrolled across the screen after each newscast became normal. The endless protests. Nixon comes to mind.

But, peace in Vietnam before the November election would have lead to Johnson’s chosen successor, Hubert Humphrey, while continued war would mean victory for Richard Nixon, who was running on the promise of peace.
