It's almost as though the human ability to abstract and empathize allow one to share in the experience of almost anyone.

Exactly. If I can empathize with a character like Chappie and his child-like innocence, or pretty much any sci-fi alien, or even fucking Disney cartoon characters despite them looking nothing like me and not even being the same species, then identity and superficial external attributes are completely and utterly irrelevant to the purpose and impact of a character.
