Little known fact is that GW was the state of Virginia's, and possibly the entire 13 colonies, largest producer of alcohol.

He decided early on in his planting career that Virginia's top crop at the time (1750's) tobacco was not sustainable, and since he had plenty of water available at Mount Vernon on the Potomac, he would grow barley and rye, and then he set up the largest whiskey distillery in the colonies just up the river in Alexandria with which to make it.
