Archived Update from the Big Island: It has begun (whatever)
submitted 2.6 years ago by Le_Squish
Overnight, cracks that had been one inch, widen to more than a foot in the Leilani subdivision. Roads were closed as the county covered the cracks with metal plates. The island awoke to a brillant red sunrise but earthquakes had decreased.
This morning 10:30 HST we had an earthquake now reported as a 5.0 at Pu'u O'o that shook all of Puna and Hilo. Shortly after the quake a reddish plume could be seen rising from into the sky as Pu'u O'o apparently collapsed.
At 4:30 pm, lava started breaching the surface in Leilani subdivision at mohala street. It appears to be a fissure event and evacuation has begun.
Local news report with video: http://www.khon2.com/news/local-news/agencies-prepare-for-possible-eruption-from-kilauea-volcano/1155831630
I currently have not heard word of how fast the fissure is opening and in what direction. Will report when I find out.
Fissure Update: Residents have pooled data and found that the crack extends the entire length of the subdivision but currently only about 200 feet or so is erupting.

Do yourself a favor and don't stay at a chain hotel. Vacation rental/B&B is cheaper and often with better accommodations.

Thanks. I talked to a hippie who said he rented a van for about $30 a day and slept in it in beach parking lots. That sounds cheap & fun.

You can stay B&B for $50 enjoy some plumbing. Our gas prices are brutal, you don't want to explore in a gas guzzler.
