Trails needs to be a regularly surveyed and maintained area here. The big Island is very rural. 4000 square miles with a population of barely 200k. If you get lost, or fall off a trail into a ravine it is likely no one will find you.

Entire island is criss crossed with so many lava tube that radar is not reliable. Lava tubes could also still have lava in them, or fresh water or even sea water. Also, some basalts collapse easy while others are more solid. Flash flooding, landslides and sinks also rapidly change ground conditions.

Locals are also starting to turn against offloading because it erodes our very thin soil. I have about 6 inches soil but many places have half that or none.

You probably can off road on other islands that are geological older and have settled but cruising tjrough strange wilds is safer on foot or bike here.

It's also not safe to sky dive here. Wind too strong.
